This is a callable function.

What it does

The directory holding a path, or nothing when the path is a root.

Where directoryOf answers . for a bare name, this answers nothing for a

path that has nowhere above it, so a caller walking upwards is told when to

stop rather than looping on a root that is its own parent.

Read the signature
